UCD bounced back from their hiding to Bray Wanderers last week to burst Bohemians’ bubble and surely end any lingering hopes of a late title charge from Dalymount.
Bohs were chasing a fifth win on the spin which would have left them just four points off the top of the table.
But Stephen Doyle’s first goal of the season, and a stunning late strike from Darren Meenan, ended that run as UCD came alive in the second half to deserve their victory.
The lead came on 57 minutes when Hugh Douglas’s free-kick found Doyle on the edge of the Bohs area and his shot took a deflection off a defender to loop over keeper Barry Murphy.
Winger Meenan then sealed it on 83 minutes when he was given far too much space before curling a delightful shot to the top corner of the net from 20 yards.
UCD: McGinley; Douglas, Leahy, Boyle, D. O’Connor; P. O’Conor, Creevy (Marshall, 31), Corry, Meenan; Doyle (Belhout, 76 mins.), Rusk.
BOHEMIANS: Murphy; Rossiter (Lopez, h/t), O’Brien, Price, Cahill; Flood, Hurley (Fagan, 68 mins.), Cronin (Dixon, 49 mins.), Bayly, Brennan;
Downes.
REFEREE: D Hancock (Dublin).
