BOHEMIANS cruised to this most comfortable of wins over a Drogheda side who've suddenly lost their way following a fine spell mid-season that's now a distant memory.  Defensively frail United probably shaded an opening half that was disappointing to say the least. It was half an hour before Drogheda caused a stir when Lee Lynch sent a fine pass out to Peter McMahon who clipped the ball into the box for Gavin Brennan who saw his fine header stopped by Craig Sexton. Just when it appeared this dreary affair would break goalless the visitors hit the front at the end of the half after Owen Heary stole in at the back post to send a bullet like header to the net from Killian Brennan’s free. That the second half began with a flourish was more down to some awful Drogheda defending rather than brilliance on the part of Bohemians. Straight from the off the Gypsies should have doubled their lead after Anto Whelan skipped all too easily down the right before setting up Aidan Downes who somehow stroked his shot wide. However, United’s generosity in the defending stakes knows no bounds at the moment and within a couple of minutes a calamitous attempt at clearing a straightforward ball saw Dave Rogers and Robbie Clarke mess up allowing Glen Cronin in to rattle his shot home. Robert Bayly, Downes and substitute Chris Fagan all had chances to make the margin of victory even more comprehensive but fortunately for Drogheda the score line remained respectable. DROGHEDA UNITED: Duggan; Gaul (Mulvenna 75), McNally, Rogers, Clarke; M O'Brien, Gannon (Hand 55), Lynch, McMahon, Brennan; White (Corcoran 75). BOHEMIANS: Sexton; Heary, Price, Burns, Rossiter; Flood (Hurley 85), Buckley, Cronin, K Brennan, Forrester (Bayly 55); Downes (Fagan 79). REFEREE: T Connolly (Dublin). |
