SLIGO ROVERS unveiled new signing Conor Powell at the Showgrounds then promptly went top of the table thanks to a 2-0 defeat of Drogheda United.

Matthew Blinkhorn and Eoin Doyle got the goals for the second successive game, as the Bit O’ Red finally broke down a well-organised Drogheda side in the last half-hour.

Blinkhorn flicked home the first from close range after an initial Jason McGuinness header had been taken off the line.

And Doyle wrapped it up with a close range second, with both goals created by Joseph Ndo corners.

Drogheda had chances in the second half as well, but Rovers keeper Brendan Clarke pulled off superb saves to deny firstly Gavin Brennan and then Daniel Corcoran.

Sligo’s Richie Ryan also hit the post from a free-kick at the start of the second half, but Blinkhorn finally broke the deadlock just before the hour-mark, before Doyle wrapped it up with ten minutes left.

SLIGO ROVERS: Clarke, Keane, Peers, McGuinness, Greene, Cretaro (Dillon 65), Ndo, Ryan, Kirby (Russell 70), Doyle, Blinkhorn (Davoren 77).

DROGHEDA UNITED: Trimble, C O’Brien (Gaul 56), McNally, Rogers, Hand, M O’Brien (Freeman 85), Gannon, Quigley, McMahon, Corcoran, Brennan (Thompson 74).
