St Patrick’s Athletic further extended their good run of form by claiming a 1-0 win over Bohemians at Dalymount Park.

Daryl Kavanagh’s second-half strike sunk the Gypsies, who perhaps deserved more from the game but Pete Mahon’s side will just be delighted that they took the three points.

In a first period devoid of many clear-cut goalscoring opportunities, it was Bohs who shaded it in terms of possession and pushing their opponents back inside their own half.

Leaving Cert student Christopher Forrester was the stand-out player for the home side as he linked up well with Owen Heary, cut inside to devastating affect and even went close with a couple of efforts.

Yet, it was St Pat’s who created the first meaningful chance on 28 minutes when Evan McMillan roamed forward and drilled a cross into his brother, David, who hooked a shot over.

Less than 60 seconds later, Bohs spurned a chance of their own when Keith Buckley blasted wide after Killian Brennan’s original shot was blocked by keeper Gary Rogers into his path.

As they dominated play, Pat Fenlon’s side began to threaten more with Forrester twice firing wide, while Rogers saved an effort from striker Anthony Flood.

On 54 minutes, the visitors almost took a surprise lead when Kavanagh spun away from Aidan Price inside the Bohs penalty area, but his shot was weak and straight at Chris O’Connor.

That should have served as a warning to the home team, but they did not heed it as Kavanagh opened the scoring on 76 minutes with a fine finish after cutting inside onto his left and letting rip.

Bohs tried to claw their way back into the contest with Heary making a break forward that led to a corner from which Aidan Price headed over after rising highest in the box.

Kavanagh should have wrapped the game up in injury time when he broke the offside trap and raced onto Ian Daly’s pass, although his shot was straight at O’Connor.

Nevertheless, the Tipperary native’s goal earlier in the game proved to be enough for the Saints to march their way to a fourth win in their last five league games.
