BRAY WANDERERS continued their best ever start to a Premier Division campaign when two early goals from Conor Murphy and by Derek Prendergast  gave them a comfortable victory over Galway United.

Pat Devlin's side are very much among the title contenders and lie second in the table, just a point behind leaders Shamrock Rovers.

It has been a remarkable turn-around in fate for unfancied Bray who narrowly avoided relegation last season when beating Monaghan United by a penalty-shoot out in the promotion/relegation play-offs.

The Seagulls had the perfect start on three minutes when a corner by midfielder Gary Dempsey was flicked on by defender Dane Massey's head to allow teenage strriker Murphy to fire home in a crowded goalmouth at the near post.

It got worse for the Westerners six minutes later when another Dempsey corner on the left again found the Galway defence in disarray with central defender Prendergast able to bundle the ball home at the far post.

Little was seen of Galway as an attacking force such was Bray's dominance with home 'keeper  Darren Quigley not having to make even one save in a totally one-sided first half.

Another Dempsey corner, this time on the right, almost saw the Seagulls stretch their lead on 38 minutes. Winger Jake Kelly's first effort was blocked by a wall of defenders and his second from the rebound was just over the bar.

Kelly had another opportunity early in the second half only to shoot wide from the edge of the penalty area after John Mulroy had created the opening on the right.

Substute Shane O'Neill wasted a glorious opportunity on 73 minutes when he just failed to connect with a Jake Kelly cross from the left with the goal at his mercy. The same player had another chance seconds later only to see his close range effort brilliantly blocked by 'keeper Greg Fleming.

Bray seemed to take their foot off the pedal a little in the second half but it was still 77 minutes before Galway had their first effort on target - a weak effort by Karl Moore comfortably gathered by Quigley.

Shaun Kelly did go close to a consolation goal for the visitors on 88 minutes only to see his effort from ten yards brilliantly pushed round the post by the alert Quigley.

Bray Wanderers - Quigley; Webster, Mitchell, Prendergast, Massey;  Mulroy (Zambra 78), Dempsey, O'Connor, J.Kelly; Shields, Murphy (O'Neill 69).

Galway United - Fleming; Shaun Kelly, Sinnott, Feeney, Walsh ; Cash (Keogh 58), Eduardo, Sean Kelly, Moore; Ryan, Curran (Gary Kelly) .

     Referee - Graham Kelly (Cork).
