DERRY CITY recorded their second league win of the season when a late James McClean header earned them victory over Bray Wanderers at a windswept Carlisle Grounds. The Candystripes had their noses in front on 25 minutes after a foul by Derek Prendergast on James McClean. Kevin Deery's resulting free on the left enabled the unmarked Daniel Lafferty to head home at the far post giving 'keeper Matt Gregg no chance. City might have stretched their lead when a quick Deery free kick set up the chance for Gareth McGlynn only for Gregg to push away the effort. Then McClean saw a shot pushed out by Gregg with striker Eamon Zayed too slow to react as Adam Mitchell completed the clearance. Perhaps against the run of play, Bray equalised on 40 minutes when a quick free by Gary Dempsey in midfield found defender Dane Massey on the left. His low cross was blasted home from close range by Jake Kelly with the Derry defence asleep. Seconds before the interval, the Candystripes might have grabbed the lead when Zayed and David McDaid combined well on the right only for Deery to fire over from the edge of the box. A snap shot from Jake Kelly early in the second half was easily dealt with by Derry 'keeper Gerard Doherty as Bray, with the wind in their favour, started to dominate the proceedings. Then striker John Mulroy nearly grabbed the Seagulls the lead with a 25 yard effort just over the bar. McClean then twice went close for Derry with first a header just over the top and then failing to shoot home from close range after a Deery cross. Bray missed an easy chance on 65 minutes when Under 19 international Conor Murphy somehow headed wide from two yards after a Danny O'Connor cross had carved open the Derry defence. McClean atoned for his early lapses when he headed home on 74 minutes at the far post following a superb cross from the right by substitute Stephen McLaughlin as Stephen Kenny's team comfortably held out for the win.
