JOHN DILLON'S  opportunistic goal on the half hour ensured Paul Cook enjoyed his first success at Terryland Park as Sligo Rovers manager. The Bit O’Red produced a splendid footballing performance stuffed with passing football to secure three vital points against their Connacht neighbours. Galway were busy in the opening quarter and their determination caused Sligo problems as Bobby Ryan and Sean Kelly had efforts on target, but Sligo improved as the half wore on. Always willing and able to pass the ball Sligo kept possession for long spells and it was inevitable that opportunities would be created. In the 30th minute John Russell, once a Galway favourite, dashed out to the left flank and crossed for Dillon, who controlled before supplying a crisp finish from 14 yards. Seconds later a Richie Ryan corner found Matthew Blinkhorn, but the bustling centre forward headed wide in a packed area. Sligo were controlling the contest and Dillon slammed a long distance shot wide as the Bit O’Red sought to land another blow. Fourteen minutes after the restart Russell drifted on to an Aaron Greene flick, but Galway custodian Greg Fleming clawed the ball to safety. Paul Cook’s team were in control and Dillon saw a blistering 65th minute shot rebound off the post as Galway were pegged back by the visitors polished midfield unit. Late on Galway battled, but they never seriously threatened the Sligo defence as the vibrant visitors posted a crucial away success.  Galway United: Fleming; Shaun Kelly, Sinnott, Maher, Walsh; Cash, Sean Kelly, Murphy (Feeney, 83), Moore; Ryan; Yoffe (E Curran, 76).  Sligo Rovers: Clarke; Keane, Peers, McGuinness, Davoren; Dillon (Ndo, 75), Ryan, Russell, Greene; Kirby (Ventre, 65), Blinkhorn (Doyle, 76).  Referee: D Hancock (Dublin).  |
