Shamrock Rovers moved back into pole position in the Premier Division with a 2-0 victory over Drogheda United at Tallaght Stadium on Friday evening.

Thomas Stewart and Gary Twigg supplied the goals as Drogheda had Corie Treacy and Ryan Brennan sent off on a night that saw them relegated to the First Division.

However, this game was all about the Hoops as they leapfrogged ahead of rivals Bohemians to take a two-point cushion in the final week, which is a trip to the Carlisle Grounds to take on Bray Wanderers.

Michael O'Neill's team will be high on confidence going into that fixture, but they will have to start better in that game than they did against Drogheda as they struggled to get going early on.

In fact, it was the Boynesiders who played the better football in the first-half with John Flood, Yael Haro, Paul Crowley and Brendan McGill all going close with efforts.

With a five-man midfield dominating their hosts, Bobby Browne's side looked the more likely to break the deadlock and should have held a lead going in at the break.

Although, Rovers came roaring back in the second period with Stewart opening the scoring on 51 minutes. The former Derry City attacker nodded in from only a few yards out after Craig Sives had headed an Enda Stevens cross into his path.

That goal lifted the tension around the Dublin venue and it wasn't long before they were celebrating another goal. This time it was the familiar figure of Twigg netting when he added the perfect compliment to Chris Turner's pass.

Drogheda struggled to fight their way back into the game after those two goals and had former Rovers player Corie Treacy sent off for a dangerous tackle.

Substitute Robert Bayly should have wrapped up the win when the ball fell to him on the edge of the penalty area, but the midfielder failed to hit the target with his wicked shot.

With time running out, Ryan Brennan was sent off as Drogheda's miserable evening tumbled to a disappointing end. For Rovers, a first league win in 16 years now looks a real possibility.
