Inspired by the goalkeeping heroics of Scotsman Peter Cherrie, Dundalk recorded a deserved victory over UCD despite being down to ten men for the entire second half at the Belfield Bowl last night.
Cherrie pulled off a string of superb saves during the 90 minutes with Liam Burns  outstanding in the centre of defence after Gary Breen was shown the red card in the 46th minute.
But the major consolation for College was that after Sporting Fingal's 3-1 victory over Galway United at Morton Stadium, Martin Russell's team are still guaranteed their place in the Premier Division next season.
The Students had a chance to open their account on 17 minutes when midfielder Greg Bolger played a clever ball to Ciaran Kilduff who then put fellow striker David McMillan in the clear. But 'keeper Cherrie was quickest to react when blocking the close range effort.
Then another shot by McMillan two minutes later caused more problems for the visitors' defence with a 30 yard effort brilliantly pushed over by the alert Cherrie.
The 'keeper again came to Dundalk's rescue when getting down to save a ten yard effort from winger Chris Mulhall after the always dangerous Kilduff had created the opening.
Against the run of play, Dundalk opened the scoring on the half hour. Stephen Maher, who had only come on as a substitute just a minute earlier, burst down the right to cross to unmarked striker Fahrudin Kudozovic who tapped the ball home at the far post.
But Dundalk suffered a major set-back a minute into added time of the first half when Cork referee Anthony Buttimer showed the red card to central defender Breen for an alleged elbow challenge on College midfielder Greg Bolger. It seemed a harsh decision.
College went close to an equaliser a minute after the interval when a 20 yard effort from midfielder Paul Corry was pushed away by Cherrie. Then McMillan shot straight at the 'keeper with the goal at his mercy.
With their numerical advantage in the second half, the Students dominated with Keith Ward and David McMillan twice each missing clear-cut scoring opportunites.
College wasted a glorious opportunity of an equaliser on 74 minutes when Corry was taken down by midfielder Dean Bennett inside the area. The ensuing penalty by Bolger was brilliantly parried on to the crossbar and then grabbed by man of the match Cherrie.
The Students were to rue that miss when substitute Johnny  Breen had Dundalk further in front on 85 minutes when he took advantage of a misdirected back pass from central defender Michael Leahy to collect the ball and calmly shoot through the legs of 'keeper Billy Brennan into the net. It was no more than Dundalk deserved.
