St Patrick’s push for European football next season remains firmly on track following this comfortable victory over a Drogheda side whose relegation to the lower division is all but confirmed. A low key start to the match came to an end when Pats scored after fourteen minutes from a Derek Doyle corner which one of the smallest men on the park Ryan Guy headed to the net off the underside of the crossbar. With half an hour gone the visitors appeared to have doubled their advantage when Danny North raced clear and sent his shot past Robert Duggan towards goal, however, Guy, who was in an offside position, decided to help the ball on its way ensuring the goal was ruled out. The Saints created a couple of good chances early on in the second half as Duggan did well to push Guy’s shot to safety and North’s close range header flew narrowly over the bar. Just short of the hour the visitors doubled their advantage when Duggan could only parry Doyle’s fine strike into the path of North who headed home. Within minutes Drogheda’s now slim hopes of getting something from the match were dealt another blow when Eric McGill lunged two-footed at North and referee Tom Connolly reached immediately for the red card. Pats rounded off a sound night’s work with a third goal five minutes from time when Gareth O’Connor’s free from the left deceived all in sundry before nestling in the net. Drogheda: Duggan, Haro (Osborne 73), McNally, McGill, Meenan, McMahon, Crowley, Flood, Harris, Daly (Brennan 67), Fitzpatrick (McNamara 80). St. Patricks: Rogers, Lynch, Bermingham, Kenna, Haverty, Guy, Mulcahy, North (Byrne 88), McAllister (Stewart 81), O’Connor (O’Brien 88), Doyle. Referee: T. Connolly (Dublin) |
