Dundalk ended a 21 year wait for a win at Richmond Park with a hard fought win.

The result means Pete Mahon’s side are in danger of slipping out of the European spots next week as they have won just one point in their last four games.

The match started slowly and the only action of note in the opening 25 minutes saw Brian Cash fire over and Ian Bermingham fed Dave McAllister but his cross evaded Ryan Guy.

The game exploded to life as Matthew Tipton opened the scoring for the visitors, getting on the end of Daniel Kearns’ low cross that had evaded the dive of Gary Rogers.

The Meathman then reacted sharply to turn a Faz Kudozovic shot wide, but the Saints’ woes were compounded on 29 minutes as Bermingham tripped Tom Miller off the ball and was given a straight red card by referee Alan Kelly.

The Lilywhites were content to hold on to possession and work the ten men of St Pat’s for the rest of the half, but they did get a scare as Cash had a go from the edge of the box, but it flew just wide.

The small band of travelling Dundalk fans’ night got even better within seven minutes of the restart as Ross Gaynor doubled the lead.

Dean Bennett found Kudozovic in the box, he had efforts blocked by Stuart Byrne and a combination of Rogers and Derek Pender but the ball ran to the onrushing Ardee man who swept the ball home.

Kearns went close with an effort that deflected off Conor Kenna, while Garry Breen should have added a third with a header from Gaynor’s corner that just went wide.

And the Saints got a lifeline on 65 minutes as Kelly spotted a Liam Burns foul on Kenna in the box. Damian Lynch’s initial effort was saved by Peter Cherrie but the rebound fell kindly for the Saints’ skipper who took his second chance.

Pat’s pushed despite their numerical disadvantage, but although Wayne Hatswell narrowly avoided scoring an own goal, they couldn’t equalise.

Tipton almost put the result beyond doubt in injury time, but his effort was just wide but two was enough for Ian Foster’s charges.
