A dramatic added time equaliser from midfielder Daire Doyle further eased Bray Wanderers' worries of automatic relegation in a tense clash with fellow strugglers UCD at the Carlisle Grounds last night. This was the Seagulls first point against College in four league games this season and all the more noteworthy as this was Pat Devlin's side's fifth energy-sapping competitive game in 12 days. College had an early chance when midfielder Chris Mulhall ran through a static Bray defence only to see his effort from 16 yards well blocked by 'keeper Matt Gregg. The Students again went close when a long ball out of defence by skipper Evan McMillan found Karl Moore on the left. His low cross on ten minutes allowed striker David McMillan get in a close range effort pushed on to the bar by the alert Gregg and over for a corner. Bray looked promising when Doyle supplied a defence-splitting pass for Dean Zambra who then played a neat one-two with Danny O'Connor only to fire just wide of the upright. The Seagulls almost broke the ceadlock on 27 minutes when a cross from Zambra on the right was sliced goalwards by central defender Michael Leahy. Fortunately for College, 'keeper Billy Brennan was able to grab the ball before it entered the net. Taking advantage of that let-off, the Students were in front on the half hour when a quick ball from the right by Chris Mulhall allowed striker McMillan to gallop through the home defence. His first effort was blocked by Gregg only to calmly head home the rebound. College stretched their lead on 53 minutes when midfielder Greg Bolger created the opening for David McMillan to play a clever reverse pass to Ciaran Kiliduff. Striker McMillan then made no mistake with a clinical finish from the edge of the box. Bray reduced the lead on the hour when following a Dave Webster throw-in on the right, skipper Danny O'Connor flicked the ball on for Doyle to head home from six yards. Defender Sean Russell then went close for College with a long range free narrowly wide of the upright. Bray Wanderers - Gregg; Webster (Shaw 66), Prendergast (Brennan 62), Mitchell, Massey; Zambra, Dempsey, D.O'Connor (Tuohy 83), Doyle; O'Neill, Shields. |
