Bohemians picked up three crucial points to boost their title challenge after beating Drogheda United 2-0 at Dalymount Park on Monday. The Gypsies are chasing a third Premier Division title in a row and have hit their best form of the season at just the right time. Goals from Killian Brennan and Jason Byrne proved to be enough for them to win this contest, but Dundalk’s victory over leaders Shamrock Rovers meant it helped to close the gap. Bohs started the game fired up with Conor Powell volleying over after just six minutes, while Brennan’s curling free-kick was just too high as they pushed for an early goal. Drogheda defender Yael Haro then headed an effort against his own post before Byrne wasted two good chances as he fired wide and shot straight at keeper Robert Duggan. But the home team did not have to wait too long for the goal that their positive performance deserved when Brennan smashed in a stunning effort on 24 minutes after linking up with Owen Heary. The Phibsboro outfit then lit up the scoreboard for a second time when Byrne broke free of his marker to meet Glenn Cronin’s cross and head in on 33 minutes. With Bohs dominating, there was little that the visitors could do to swing the tide in their favour as Ryan Brennan blasted over from distance in a rare attempt on goal. After the break, the Boynesiders switched from a 4-5-1 system to a 4-4-2 and it resulted in Darragh McNamara and John Flood finding enough space to unleash shots that Bohs keeper Chris O’Connor saved. Raffaele Cretaro had two chances late on and Paddy Madden brought the best out of Duggan as the home team tried to get a third goal. But they had done enough to claim the win.
