Sligo Rovers 4 Sporting Fingal 3

Sporting Fingal scored three late goals but couldn’t prevent Sligo Rovers from overtaking them in the race for fourth in the Airtricity League Premier Division.

Rovers scored twice in each half at The Showgrounds, but saw a four-goal lead disintegrate as they switched off in the closing stages.

The opener came on 38 minutes, when Joseph Ndo got a second bite of the cheery after his corner was returned to him, and he swung the ball in for Gavin Peers to head home from close range.

Romuald Boco claimed the second in first half injury-time, when he raced onto Matthew Blinkhorn’s through-ball and chipped the ball over Darren Quigley.

The same player made it three on 61 minutes, when Ndo’s corner fell to him at the far post and he controlled it on the chest before shooting home.

And Rovers went four up when substitutes Gary McCabe and Eoin Doyle combined for the latter to fire home.

But Fingal grabbed a lifeline when Gary O’Neill finished from close range. And they were right back in it when Kenny Browne shot home with eight minutes left.

Shaun Williams got the third, but it came late in added-time, and Rovers deservedly clung on for all three points.
