Bohemians boosted their chances of retaining the Premier Division title after beating UCD 3-1 at Dalymount Park on Friday evening. Pat Fenlon’s side may be chasing rivals Shamrock Rovers, although this victory moves them onto 53 points and keeps them right in contention. First-half goals from Jason Byrne and Gareth McGlynn put them ahead before Paul Corry pulled one back for the visitors. But Mark Quigley made sure of the win late on. Bohs were impressive right from the start and fully deserved to stretch their unbeaten run to five games as they picked up only their sixth home league victory of the campaign. An early effort from Byrne signaled their intent as he hooked a shot over, but UCD showed that they should be underestimated as Brian Shortall tested the alertness of Bohs keeper Chris O’Connor with a header. Karl Moore then curled a free-kick just over, but Bohs took control with Jason McGuinness having a goal ruled out for offside before they eventually took the lead on 29 minutes. A swift counter attack saw Killian Brennan flick the ball inside to McGlynn who slid a pass to Byrne and he fired in to net for the first time since May 21. Bohs kept the pressure on with Moore clearing a shot from McGlynn off the line before the Donegal native got a goal of his own on 37 minutes with a superb finish. After the break, it was more of the same from the home team as Byrne hit the post with a header, while McGlynn and Owen Heary had shots saved by UCD keeper Billy Brennan. They looked to be down and out by that stage, but the Students pulled a goal back through Corry when he perfectly executed a pass from Chris Mulhall. Although there was little they could do to halt the Gypsies’ march as Quigley capped off a fine evening with an impressive individual effort on 84 minutes to make sure of the win. Next up for the champions is a home game against Drogheda United, who should be fearful as Pat Fenlon’s side are in devastating form right now.
