Shamrock Rovers took a giant leap towards claiming the Airtricity League Premier Division trophy when they defeated title rivals St. Patrick’s Athletic 3-1 at Richmond Park. The Saints took the advantage in the opening minutes when Ryan Guy was given a free header in the six yard box to head home after just two minutes. However, Gary Twigg equalized in the dying moments of the first half when he bounced on a loose ball after Craig Sives’s header had rebounded off the post. The Hoops then went 2-1 up on 55 minutes when Dave Mulcahy failed to clear Billy Dennehy’s cross into the box and Tommy Stewart was on hand to fire the visitors ahead. The icing was put on the cake on 63 minutes when Dennehy brilliantly fired home from the edge of the box to secure a vital win for Rovers.
