There was relief all round Dalymount Park as a Raffaele Cretaro double saw Bohemians moved into third in the table. After losing to Shamrock Rovers and Galway United in their last two games, Pat Fenlon made six changes to his team in the hope of returning to winning ways and although Bray did test them it was a case of mission accomplished. Youngster Gary Burke was particularly impressive for the champions as Paul Keegan had the first shot but was blocked by Dave Webster, before Paddy Madden headed over a Raffaele Cretaro cross. Madden should have scored from a Keegan corner while at the other end Chris O’Connor saved well from Shane O’Neill. Madden had an effort smartly saved by Matt Gregg, before Bohs took the lead on 32 minutes through Cretaro as he latched on to Ken Oman’s header and beat Gregg with a well placed low shot into the corner. Madden missed another gilt-edged chance to head home Conor Powell’s cross, but his effort was straight at Gregg. The Seagulls looked more composed after the break as Gary Dempsey fired over with a free, before Derek Prendergast should have done better when meeting Dempsey’s corner with a header. As they pushed they left openings at the other end and Madden again should have doubled the lead with two fine chances. O’Connor’s long clearance went all the way through, but the youngster couldn’t lift his shot over the onrushing Gregg. Brian Shelley then provided the impetus with a burst forward, he found Brennan and his right footed cross was glanced just wide by Madden. The Seagulls who should have scored next as O’Connor saved from Jake Kelly twice in two minutes. First Dean Zambra found Dean Massey at the back post, he headed to Kelly who was denied by O’Connor, before the striker was put through by John Mulroy, only for the Australian to save well. Bohs were the next not to take their chances as Cretaro and Jason Byrne should have done better in front of goal as the game edged towards a tense conclusion. Cretaro had claims for a penalty waved away by Tom Connolly when he went down under Dave Prendergast’s challenge with the goal at his mercy. But the diminutive striker was soon smiling again as he tucked the ball home after Jason Byrne had flicked Cronin’s ball into his path on 84 minutes to seal the win. BOHEMIANS – O’Connor; Heary, Shelley, Oman, Powell; Brennan (McGlynn 64), Cronin, Keegan, Burke (Quigley 90); Madden (Byrne 64), Cretaro. BRAY WANDERERS – Gregg; Webster, S O’Connor, Prendergast, Houston; Zambra, Dempsey, D O’Connor (Shields 87), Mulroy; O’Neill (Massey 32), Kelly (Tuohy 90). REFEREE: T Connolly (Dublin). |
