A quickfire double at the end of the opening half helped Sligo Rovers defeat UCD at the Showgrounds on Saturday night.

Captain Conor O’Grady opened the scoring with a stunning volley on 42 minutes after he was picked out by Romuald Boco’s superb cross.

And just two minutes later, the league’s top scorer, Padraig Amond, doubled the advantage when he worked a skilful one-two with Gary McCabe and hammered the ball past Gerard Barron in the UCD goal.

Rovers were full value for the win that lifts them to third in the Premier Division, though it did take them a while to grab the third, with Boco, Joseph Ndo and McCabe missing chances.

But substitute Matthew Blinkhorn eventually claimed the third with his second goal in two league games.

Centre-back Derek Foran scored the fourth with ten minutes left, when he headed McCabe’s corner past Barron.

The UCD netminder had denied Foran earlier in the game, when he tipped the defender’s header from Ndo’s cross over the top.

UCD’s best chances came in the first half when Ciaran Kilduff dragged a shot from outside the area just wide, while a Paul O’Connor corner bounced invitingly in the box but no-one could capitalise.

Sligo: Gibson, Keane, Lauchlan, Foran, Davoren, McCabe, O’Grady, Boco, Dillon (Doyle 77), Ndo (Ventre 70), Amond (Blinkhorn 70).

UCD: Barron, P O’Connor, McMillan, Boyle, Nangle (Leahy 73), Wilson (Moore 64), Roche (Rusk 73), Creevy, Ward, Mulhall, Kilduff.
