Bohemians slumped to defeat against nine-man Galway United at Dalymount Park in a thrilling encounter.

Goals from Stephen O’Donnell and Derek O’Brien helped the Tribesmen to their second victory of the season at Dalymount Park, although the shine was taken off their performance by red cards to Rhys Meynell and Paul Sinnott.

Ex-Bohs man O’Donnell put the visitors ahead with a stunning free kick on 42 minutes. However, there was controversy as O’Donnell prepared to take the kick – amid pushing and shoving in the penalty area, Meynell was shown a straight red card after he appeared to strike Owen Heary.

Despite their numerical advantage, Bohemians could not break down a stubborn Galway defence.

When the second goal of the game came, it was to double Galway’s advantage. Jamie McKenzie swung a ball into the box and O’Brien popped-up to edge the ball past Chris O’Connor.

Bohemians were stunned and they could not find their way back into the match, not even when Galway were reduced to nine men on 74 minutes when Sinnott was given his marching orders for a foul on Killian Brennan.

Bohemians: O'Connor; Heary, Rossiter (Cronin 62 mins), McGuinness, Shelley; Higgins, Quigley (Madden 62 mins), Brennan, Keegan; Cretaro (Greene 85), Byrne.

Galway United: Ryan; Walsh, Meynell, McKenzie, Sinnott; O'Brien, Curran, Foley, O'Donnell; Sheppard, King (Reilly 44).

Referee: D Hancock.
