Sporting Fingal stumbled ahead of Thursday’s vital Europa League fixture when they suffered a shock home defeat to Drogheda United.

The Boynesiders snatched all three points in the dying moments to give their battle against relegation a huge boost, while also damaging Fingal’s attempts to narrow the gap at the top of the table.

Eamon Zayed had put the home side ahead on 19 minutes when he finished from close range.

However, their lead was cancelled on 39 minutes when Peter McMahon fired home from inside the area after being set-up by John Flood.

The turning point of the match came on 44 minutes when Keith Quinn was shown his second yellow card after obstructing Alan McNally.

With a numerical advantage, the visitors pushed for a winner. However, Drogheda too were reduced to ten men with five minutes to go after Eoghan Osbourne was dismissed for blocking Zayed.

Despite being down to ten men, Drogheda did get the winning goal. Michael Daly headed McMahon’s free goal goalward and Alan McNally was on hand to finish from close range.
