Bohemians moved up to third in the table ahead of their vital return leg against TNS in the Champions League with a solid win over Sligo Rovers at Dalymount Park. Mark Quigley was in inspired form for the champions who survived some first half scares to take complete control with goals from Paul Keegan and Ken Oman either side of the break doing the damage. And ex-St Pat’s man Quigley was at the heard of everything the Gypsies did well, creating both goals and plenty of other opportunities for those around him from his free role on the left flank. Bohs started brightly, with Quigley, Paddy Madden and Raffaele Cretaro creating an opening for Gareth McGlynn, but he just missed out on Cretaro’s low cross. Quigley had a chip saved, while John Russell had a free header at the other end from a Joseph Ndo corner that flew just wide. Top scorer Padraig Amond outpaced Owen Heary to race on to a Gavin Peers ball, but under pressure from Barry Murphy his shot flew over the bar. Peers almost put the ball into his own net from a Conor Powell cross, but Richard Brush saved his defender’s blushes with a reaction save. Quigley then headed wide, while Murphy brilliantly denied Jim Lauchlan’s rising drive, before Amond put a free header wide. And those missed chances were to cost the Bit O’Red as Keegan struck. Quigley’s no-look pass created the opening as Madden cut the ball back for the midfielder to score. Quigley fired over and Cretaro wasted a chance before the break, while Keegan could have had a second after the break with a low shot that sailed just wide. But Oman made it two from a well-worked free. The big centre half peeled around the back post and was found by Quigley’s inch perfect delivery and headed home from a narrow angle. Bohs saw out the game comfortably from there as Sligo rarely threatened with Murphy saving a rare Richie Ryan effort, while Madden narrowly missed a McGlynn cross. BOHEMIANS – Murphy; Shelley, Heary, Oman, Powell; McGlynn, Higgins, Keegan (Cronin 73), Quigley; Cretaro (Brennan 88), Madden (Byrne 79). SLIGO ROVERS – Brush; Keane, Peers, Lauchlan, Davoren; Doyle (O’Grady 86), Ndo, Russell (Ventre 86), Ryan, Dillon (McCabe 57); Amond. REFEREE – D McKeon (Dublin). |
