Bottom of the table Bray Wanderers are still looking for their first ever victory over Sporting Fingal as this sixth meeting of the sides in just two seasons ended in a comfortable victory for Liam Buckley’s men in Friday's one-sided Premier Division clash at the Carlisle Grounds.
It was the perfect boost for Fingal before they take on Portuguese side Maritimo in next Thursday’s Europa League second preliminary round tie in Madeira.
With their first serious attack, Sporting had their noses in front on just six minutes when experienced striker Glen Crowe fired home from close range past ‘keeper Brian Kane after a low cross from Conan Byrne on the right.
Fingal stretched their lead on 19 minutes when defender Ger O’Brien’s cross had Kane pushing the ball off the feet of Eamon Zayed only for Alan Kirby to fire home the rebound from 12 yards.
FAI Ford Cup winner Fingal made the points safe on 61 minutes when Zayed’s volley struck the upright after a deep cross by substitute Colm James on the right. Kirby made no mistake when firing home the rebound from 12 yards.
Bray Wanderers: Kane; S O’Connor (Mitchell 16), D O’Connor, Prendergast, Massey; Mulroy, Shields, Kavanagh (R Doyle 63), Zambra (N Byrne 84) , Kelly; S’O’Neill.
Sporting Fingal: Clarke; O’Brien (James 35), Hawkins, Browne, Fitzgerald (Quinn 68); C.Byrne (Dawson 45), Williams, Finn, Kirby, Zayed; Crowe. |
