Sligo Rovers were left frustrated at Morton Stadium on Monday evening after drawing 1-1 with Sporting Fingal. Paul Cook’s side played the better brand of football and created a number of chances, but they only had one goal to celebrate and one to rue when the final whistle sounded. Eoin Doyle broke the deadlock on 14 minutes when a cross from Alan Keane was headed down by Ger O’Brien into the path of the unmarked winger, who fired in. There were some shots from distance from Ronan Finn, although the hosts rarely got in behind the Sligo defence to trouble keeper Richard Brush. However, the game was swung on 33 minutes when the Ravens profited from sloppy defending as Conan Byrne blasted a snap shot into the back of the net. Despite that set-back, the Bit O’Red continued to play in a fluid style as Richie Ryan and John Russell supported the roaming Joseph Ndo when breaking forward. John Dillon smashed a shot against the crossbar just before the break and that summed up the evening for Cook’s men – so close yet so far. Even top scorer Padraig Amond was unable to convert as he twice came close to beating Brendan Clarke, but to no avail. Sporting fought back into the game with Alan Kirby hitting the crossbar, Keith Quinn having a shot cleared off the line and Eamon Zayed missing a header. In the end, both teams settled for a point, but Sligo will feel that this was a missed opportunity.
