DUNDALK picked up their first win in three league games when they came from behind to beat local rivals Drogheda United at Oriel Park. Drogheda got off to the best possible start as they went ahead after just 8 minutes. Eoghan Osbourne found his way to the byline with a positive run and his cut back was turned home by John Flood. Dundalk looked flat after their European exertions last week but they equalised in the 22nd minute with a swift counter attack. Tom Miller found Neale Fenn with a clearing header from Gareth O'Connor's free-kick. Fenn released Tiarnan Mulvenna away on the right and his inch perfect cross was smacked home by debutant Stephen McDonnell's head. Injuries and suspensions have meant that Mulvenna has struggled to make an impact this season but he did his chances of a regular spot in Ian Foster's side no harm at all when he put Dundalk in front three minutes before the break. Faz Kuduzovic put him through with a clever pass and Mulvenna's strike had enough power to beat Paul Murphy and find the net. Drogheda pushed for an equaliser after the break and they thought they had it when Michael Daly turned a header past Gregg in the 85th minute but the goal was ruled out for offside. DUNDALK: Gregg; Kelly, Miller, Hatswell, Murphy; Mulvenna, Maher, Cawley, McDonnell (J Breen 83); Fenn, Kuduzovic. DROGHEDA UNITED: Murphy; E McGill, McNally, Kendrick, Osbourne; Brennan, Daly, Crowley, O'Connor, Ross (Duffy 53); Flood. REFEREE: Declan Hanney (Dublin). |
