UCD picked up a crucial 2-1 victory over Sporting Fingal in an entertaining clash at Morton Stadium on Friday evening. An early goal from Eamon Zayed put the home team ahead, although Andy Boyle hit back before his defensive partner Evan McMillan headed in the winner. The Ravens were missing three regular starters in Ger O’Brien, Shaun Maher and Kenny Browne, so they were forced into deploying a makeshift defence. As the game wore on that backline started to creek open, but it was Sporting who started with more purpose as their first real attack resulted in them taking the lead on 4 minutes. A clever exchange of passes between Zayed and Conan Byrne allowed the striker to get in behind the opposition’s defence and fire in his fifth league goal of the season. Liam Buckley’s side continued to pile on the pressure with Ronan Finn and Byrne both forcing UCD keeper Billy Brennan into making first-half saves. However, the momentum swung in favour of the away team on 18 minutes when they drew level. A free-kick on the right was floated into the penalty area by Paul Corry for Andy Boyle to smash a header in. Corry began to have a big influence in midfield as UCD grew in confidence and started to create their share of chances. Central to their attempts on goal was David McMillan, recent winner of the Airtricity / SWAI Player of the Month for May. On 27 minutes McMillan slid a superb pass into Ciaran Kilduff, but just as he was about to shoot Shaun Williams came across with an excellent block. Then McMillan brought the best out of Sporting shot-stopper Brendan Clarke when he collected a pass from Dwayne Wilson to fire at goal, but it was tipped over. After the interval it was all Sporting as Alan Kirby and Byrne both saw shots saved by Brennan as the hosts grew increasingly frustrated. Attack after attack led to nothing as UCD’s defence stood firm, Brennan showed his shot-saving ability and the home team missed that accuracy in their execution. They were made to pay for that wastefulness on 87 minutes when Evan McMillan rose highest in the penalty area to head in Chris Mulhall’s corner and wrap up a rare away win for Martin Russell’s young side.
