Sunday, 22 February 2009 21:20
Derry CityDerry City have announced plans to open a new state-of-the-art social club in the heart of the city. The club has secured premises on Crawford Square and will open a facility for supporters subject to being granted a licence. In a statement, the club's board of directors said, "we very much hope the facility will quickly establish itself as a focal point for supporters, sponsors and the general public in order to make the venture a financial success for the club in the long term.

"We have long held ambitions to open such a facility and we're delighted to now be in a position to make the dream a reality. The social club has full catering facilities and boosts a fantastic function room in addition to a large lounge bar area, which will be used not only for supporter and committee meetings but will also be available for private hire for fuctions such as birthdays, christenings, wedding receptions etc."

The club hopes that the social club will be open within two months and has set an introductory membership fee at £20 per person.

It was the second big announcement for the Candystripes this week, following on from the news that they had captured the signature of full back Ger O'Brien from Shamrock Rovers. O'Brien is a current Under-23 international and is one of the most highly rated defenders in the League of Ireland.
