Two goals from Thomas Stewart helped Shamrock Rovers to a convincing 2-1 win over St. Patrick’s Athletic at Richmond Park. When the sides met in Tallaght earlier in the season, the Saints ran out 2-0 winners. However, the Hoops showed how much they have improved since their early season poor spell by dominating this encounter and being fully deserved of the three points. In truth, the visitors could have won by more. The woodwork saved the home side on two occasions – first from a Dan Murray header and later from a James Chambers penalty kick – while Gary Twigg also went very close late on. Rovers dominated the early proceedings and could have taken the lead on 34 minutes when Damien Lynch fouled Paddy Kavanagh in the penalty area. However, James Chambers’s spot kick rebounded off the post to let the Saints off the hook. However, it took just two minutes for Rovers to break the deadlock. Paddy Kavanagh played Stewart through, with the ex-Derry City player controlling the ball and slotting past Gary Rogers for his first goal for Rovers. It was 2-0 on 59 minutes when Stewart latched onto Robert Bayly’s through ball before cutting inside and brilliantly driving the ball into the net. At that stage Rovers looked comfortable and substitute Twigg almost made it 3-0 but his long range effort went narrowly wide of the post. Alex Williams gave the home side a glimmer of hope on 90 minutes when his superb free kick reduced the deficit to one goal. However, Rovers held out and claimed a vital three points.
