Dundalk returned to the top of the Premier Division with this facile victory over neighbours Drogheda incidentally their first at United Park in ten years. The home side gifted the opening two goals to the visitors early on in the game with a display of defending that can best be described as awful. The Lilywhites eventually killed the game off with just over twenty minutes to go but in truth they should have been way out of sight at that stage. With just two minutes on the watch Dundalk hit the front when Ross Gaynor’s corner picked out the unmarked Gary Breen who guided his header with ease to the net. Just beyond the quarter of an hour mark Breen was afforded the freedom of the park as Gaynor once again provided the pass which the centre half steered past Paul Murphy in the home goal. The winners keeper Peter Cherrie kept Drogheda at bay either side of half-time as he made fine saves from Brian King and Gareth O’Connor. Ross Gaynor missed three successive gilt-edged opportunities in succession to make the points safe for Ian Fosters men before he eventually found the net in the 68th minute to make the point s safe. Drogheda toiled to the finish and nicked a consolation goal four minutes from time when Paul Crowley’s shot deflected off Liam Burns. Drogheda: Murphy, Treacy, Kendrick, McNally (SmithH/T), McGill (Brennan 81), Crowley, O’Connor, Harris, Daly, King, Fitzpatrick. Dundalk: Cherrie, Kelly, Hatswell, Miller, Breen, Burns, Maher, Kudozovic, Fenn (Mulvenna 76), Gaynor, Breen (McGuigan70). Referee: A. Buttimer (Cork) |
