Bohemians were forced to settle for a point in the scoreless draw with UCD at Dalymount Park on Friday evening. The Premier Division champions bounced back from a three-game losing streak last week with victory over Sporting Fingal, but they couldn’t get the goal needed to seal the win in this game. UCD may only be a newly-promoted team and have one of the youngest squads in the top flight, but they are a fine footballing side and have proved to be difficult to break down this season. Martin Russell’s young men showed little respect to their opponents in this encounter as Andy Boyle came close with a header before Ciaran Kilduff was just off target with a superb effort on 22 minutes. Bohs, who were experimenting with a 4-5-1 formation, always looked dangerous with veteran striker Jason Byrne blasting high and wide early on. But it took quite a while before the Phibsboro outfit cut through the UCD defence. When it did happen, it was an excellent move as Ruaidhri Higgins picked out Paul Keegan, who laid the ball back to Byrne to shoot just wide. Then only a minute before the break, Mark Quigley saw his powerful volley bring out a fine save from Students keeper Billy Brennan. After the interval, Quigley again threatened with a curling effort from distance, while Anthony Murphy came close with a header following a good delivery from Higgins. In a rare attempt on goal for the Students, captain Evan McMillan rose highest in the box to meet a corner, although his header failed to hit the target. Again and again Bohs pushed for the goal that would surely have swung this contest in their favour, but each time they were let down by poor finishing or a sloppy final pass. Pat Fenlon has some work to do ahead of Monday’s clash with Drogheda United as the sharpness in front of goal that the Gypsies have displayed for the last two seasons has only been seen in spells so far this campaign. For UCD, this point will give them a huge confidence booster as they continue to prove that they can hold their own in the top flight.
