It was honours even at Tallaght Stadium on Monday evening as Shamrock Rovers were held to a 1-1 draw by Sligo Rovers.

The Hoops stuck with the same starting eleven that defeated Bray Wanderers last week, while Sligo drafted Alan Keane into their side to replace the injured Mauro Almeida.

It was the home team who threatened first with Billy Dennehy crossing for Thomas Stewart, whose header was expertly turned over the crossbar by Sligo keeper Richard Brush.

But there was nothing that the shot-stopper could do on 6 minutes when Gary Twigg was afforded too much room to control a Danny Murphy pass and fire in the opening goal.

Sligo tried to respond almost immediately when Mark Doninger tested broke through the Hoops defence, but his shot was high and wide.

The hosts looked the more threatening in the first half with Aidan Price heading wide and Chris Turner forcing Brush into a reaction save from his powerful shot.

But it was Sligo who scored next when Padraig Amond cut through the centre of the Hoops defence to take Gary McCabe’s pass in and then score against his old club.

After the interval, the visitors grew in confidence as Gary McCabe twice came close to putting them in front, while Murphy shot straight at Brush in a counter attack for the hosts.

McCabe then cut in from the right flank and ghosted past several defenders before unleashing a curling shot that whizzed just wide.

Sligo’s second-half performance edged the contest and they deserved to take a point from it as Paul Cook’s men worked right to the final whistle to keep their opponents under pressure.
