Gary Twigg was back where he belongs – on the scoresheet at Tallaght Stadium – as his goal gave Shamrock Rovers their third successive win. Bray Wanderers put in an improved performance after shipping four goals at home to St Patrick’s Athletic in midweek, but Mark O’Brien’s second half dismissal saw any chance of an equaliser disappear. The night started ominously for the Seagulls who saw Billy Dennehy threaten their goal twice in the opening four minutes, but both efforts went wide. Bray captain Daire Doyle had to be brave to block a goalbound Thomas Stewart effort after ten minutes, while Danny Murphy tried his luck from distance but saw his shot fly just over the bar. The bottom side were under enough pressure not to be giving Twigg the freedom of Tallaght, but that they did from an Ollie Cahill free but his lack of match sharpness showed as he controlled the ball well, but fired wide with the goal at his mercy. He then had an effort cleared off the line by David Tyrrell after Brian Kane had dived to deny Dan Murray’s shot from a Cahill corner. But Bray then settled and began to enjoy a spell of possession, and as they began to relax Rovers hit them where it hurts. Chris Shields made a break from midfield as Wanderers looked for an unlikely goal, but his pass to Robbie Doyle was underhit and Aidan Price cut it out. Danny Murphy found Chris Turner who broke from midfield, spread the ball left to Dennehy and his cross put the chance on a plate for Twigg to score. That took the game to half-time, but Bray had a spell of possession after the break and missed two decent chances to equalise. A moment of hesitancy from Murphy allowed Dean Zambra to nip in, but Alan Mannus was quick off his line to deny the winger. Zambra then whipped in a dangerous cross from the right, but Murray headed the ball behind with Pablo Rodriguez and Robbie Doyle lurking. But their impetus disappeared when O’Brien went high on substitute Stephen Rice and Richie Winter showed the former Hoop a straight red card. Although Doyle did go close with a drive from outside the box minutes later, it was always Rovers who looked more likely to double their lead. Thomas Stewart had one ruled out for offside, James Chambers flashed a drive wide and Kane made a superb double save to deny Dennehy and Rice late on. SHAMROCK ROVERS – Mannus; Flynn, Price, Murray, Murphy; Dennehy, Turner, Chambers, Cahill (Rice 64); Stewart, Twigg (Baker 71). BRAY WANDERERS – Kane; D Doyle, O’Connor, Webster, Massey; Zambra, Shields, O’Brien, Tyrrell (O’Neill 86); Rodriguez, R Doyle (Mulroy 74). REF – R Winter (Dublin). |
