UCD and Galway United cancelled each other out in a scoreless draw at The UCD Bowl. College did go close early on when striker Ciaran Kilduff burst down the left to see his cross pushed back by midfielder Greg Bolger to set up the chance for Peter McMahon. But his effort from the edge of the box was narrowly off target. Little was seen of Galway as an attacking force although they did look for a penalty after ten minutes following a challenge on Derek O'Brien by central defender Andy Boyle. But Cork referee Graham Kelly instead booked O'Brien for a deliberate dive. But Galway did have two chances just before the interval when first striker Karl Sheppard shot into the arms of 'keeper Billy Brennan. Seconds later it was Sheppard again who shot wide from 14 yards after the chance had been set up by substitute Stephen O'Donnell. After McMahon lost possession on the edge of the box Galway had another chance on 49 minutes only for O'Donnell to shoot wide of the target. But it was the Students who went straight up the pitch coming close to breaking the deadlock only for striker Ciaran Kilduff's overhead shot to be saved by 'keeper Barry Ryan after a cross by Ciaran Nangle. The home side continued on the offensive when Graham Rusk had a shot parried by Ryan after the always dangerous Kilduff had created the opening. Then skipper Evan McMillan had a header just over the bar after a defence splitting free by Bolger. Late on Galway did threaten when first an O'Donnell free was puched away by Brennan. Then a 20 yard volley by substitute James Creaney was excellently pushed away by the alert College 'keeper.
