Dundalk stretched their unbeaten start to the Airtricity League to three games after beating Shamrock Rovers 2-0 at Tallaght Stadium on Sunday. Goals from Neale Fenn and Stephen Maher proved to be enough for Ian Foster’s side to pick up the three points from a game that they dominated throughout. After losing to St Patrick’s Athletic last week Rovers opted to make five changes to their starting line-up, including debut starts for Enda Stevens and Robert Bayly. Those changes didn’t make much of a difference though as Dundalk proved to be far superior at keeping hold of the ball and finishing their moves. Graham Barrett was first to try his luck for the hosts, although his shot was straight at keeper Peter Cherrie. That should have led to more pressure and chances from Rovers, but it was the visitors who took over. Tom Miller was excellent in midfield alongside JJ Melligan and Maher, who outplayed their opponents and bossed the game. The opening goal arrived on 35 minutes when a delightful chipped pass from Ross Gaynor set Fenn away and he only needed one touch to guide the ball into the net. It was a fine goal and one that summed up Dundalk’s play for the most part. They pushed on in search of a second, although they had to wait until the second period for that. Rovers had brought on Stephen Bradley in an effort to mix things up and he was soon followed by Sean O’Connor and Don Cowan. However, it was the Lilywhites who scored next when Maher smashed in a shot from just outside the opposition’s penalty area following superb play from Fenn. After that there was a sense of deflation from Rovers even though Cowan and Dan Murray both came close with efforts late on. Dundalk fully merited their win and go into Friday’s clash with St Patrick’s Athletic flying high on confidence and looking to keep their unbeaten run going.
