St Patrick’s Athletic extended their lead at the top of the Premier Division with a comfortable victory over UCD at Richmond Park. Vinny Faherty opened the scoring with a well-executed lob and then Ryan Guy made sure of the win with two late strikes. The Saints proved to be too strong for their opponents, who missed the influence of suspended midfielder Greg Bolger, and should have wrapped the game up long before Guy got his brace. Alex Williams twice came close to breaking the deadlock when he had a shot from the edge of the penalty area before Students keeper Billy Brennan pulled off a superb save to deflect his half volley away for a corner. Stuart Byrne then caused a goal-mouth scramble with another shot from just outside the opposition’s box, but then the goal that the home team were threatening to score arrived. An attempted clearance from Evan McMillan fell to Faherty, who clipped the ball past the last defender before chipping Brennan with a delightful finish. Faherty should have bagged his second of the game when he dragged a shot wide after Williams set him up. UCD rarely put the Saints under pressure with over-hit crosses from David McMillan testing the alertness of Gary Rogers while Ciaran Nagle’s effort striking the crossbar. As the game was winding down Guy popped up with the second goal of the night after Conor Sinnott found him in the Students’ box and he blasted in. The American then sealed the win after being set up by Paul Byrne and that makes it three wins from three for the Saints.
