ST PATRICK’S Athletic took all three points from their opening game of the season against Galway United thanks to goals from Ryan Guy and Alex Williams at Richmond Park. The home side began the brighter of the sides and despite Alex Williams missing the target from close range with a golden opportunity almost immediately, they took the lead on eight minutes through American striker Ryan Guy. Guy, who has now assumed the veteran status in Pete Mahon’s new-look side, lead by example when played into space by Stuart Byrne and smashed a thunderous drive beyond Barry Ryan in goal at the near post. A late challenge and a dive within three minutes of each other cost Stephen O'Donnell and Galway dear on 17 minutes when the midfielder was sent off for two bookable offences. The Tribesman refused to crumble however and limited the home side to a long-range lob from Gareth Coughlan and fluffed close-range flick from Vincent Faherty, that Ryan did well to save, before the break. Pat’s began the second-half with the purpose of a side intent on putting the contest to bed early and both Byrne and Faherty tested Galway’s goal with efforts. The former Galway striker fired well wide on the edge of the area and Guy was equally as wasteful as the home side pushed hard for the crucial second goal. Coughlan's deep cross from the left resulted in Jamie McKenzie slipping in the box and Williams firing home from eight yards. Faherty and Mulcahy went close with headers as Pat’s cruised to the end, while Karl Sheppard produced a single attack of note for Galway in the closing minutes when his jinking run resulted in a long-range shot over the bar from the edge of the box.
