Further proof of Gary Twigg’s emergence as a potent Shamrock Rovers striker was available at Terryland Park as Galway United suffered a crushing defeat. Man of the match Twigg departed with the match ball after scoring three critical goals to extend Rovers’ unbeaten run to four matches. Since returning to the top flight in 2007 Galway have encountered significant bother when colliding with Shamrock Rovers. The Hoops have won four out of the six contests with the other ending in draws so a high degree of expectation accompanied the visitors at Terryland Park. And 17 minutes in the passionate Rovers contingent were celebrating two opportunistic Gary Twigg goals. Only four minutes had elapsed when Dessie Baker’s precise cross found Twigg, who steered a superb header beyond Barry Ryan’s lunge. Baker was instrumental in the second too as his chip wasn’t gathered by Ryan, and Twigg pounced to edge the Hoops further ahead. Galway’s only chance of the first half arrived shortly before the break when Jay O’Shea’s quick corner found Seamus Conneely, but Derek O’Brien wasn’t able to make an adequate connection with the full back’s delivery. After the restart Galway finally started to play and Vinny Faherty halved the deficit with a powerful 55th minute drive. But Rovers responded and inevitably Twigg put the Hoops two clear again on 63 when bundling Seanie O’Connor’s corner over the line. Galway United: Ryan; Conneely, Guthrie, Breen, Daveron; O’Shea, McBrien (Edwards, 46), Kelly, Murphy (Cooke, 72), O’Brien; Faherty. Shamrock Rovers: Duggan; Treacy, Webb, Maguire, Cahill; Robinson, Cameron, Rice, O’Connor (Madden, 77); Baker (Purcell, 81), Twigg (Amond, 86). Referee: A Buttimer (Cork). |
