SLIGO Rovers’ striker Rafael Cretaro was hailed a hero at the Brandywell, his 89th minute winner ending Derry City's unbeaten record.  The Tubbercurry man took advantage of a defensive error to race from the half-way line and guide the ball home in a one-on-one situation with Derry keeper, Gerard Doherty.  But the visitors will admit that it was a fortunate victory, Derry dominating this match for long spells.  Two goals in the space of as many minutes brought the first half to life, but it was Sligo who broke the deadlock. Ex Derry winger, Owen Morrison, sent Romauld Boco scampering clear and while his shot took a slight deflection of the foot of Mark McChrystal, it help steer the ball wide of the outstretched Gerard Doherty.  But the home side bounced almost immediately when the ball had been work to the other end.  Sammy Morrow, swept the ball to the back post where the unmarked Gareth McGlynn did well to volley the ball into the Sligo net from an acute angle to level matters.  However, the home side had a claim for a penalty in the 27th minute when Sligo centre-half, Danny Ventre, got one foot to the ball but clearly impeded Morrow with his other leg but referee, Damien Hancock refused to entertain those claims.  After the break Derry started at a high tempo and McGlynn was denied a second goal by keeper Brush but Sligo should have moved into the driving seat in the 58th minute.  Owen Morrison floated in a free from the right and Rafael Cretaro, the smallest player on the pitch, failed to direct his free header on target from close range.  Brush did well to save another McGlynn effort in the 64th minute as the home side continued to storm forward at every opportunity.  Content to hit on the break, Sligo went close twice within the space of as minute minutes, Derry keeper, Gerard Doherty, did well to deny Conor O’Grady while Richie Ryan crashed an 18 yards effort off the upright with Doherty beaten.  And when Derry almost camped in the final third of the field, with O’Grady almost heading past his own keeper, Sligo took advantage of a defensive howler by Delaney to net that vital winner.  Derry City – Doherty; McCallion, McChrystal, Delaney, O’Brien (McClean, 87); McGlynn, Molloy, Martyn (Farren 68), Kearney (Higgins, 80); Morrow, Stewart. Sligo Rovers – Brush; Keane, Peers, Ventre, Holmes; Morrison (Cash, 67), Ryan, O’Grady, Doherty(McTiernan, 80); Cretaro, Boco (Torpey, 78). Referee – Mr. D. Hancock (Dublin). |
