Gary Twigg was the Rovers hero once again when he struck in the dying moments to rescue a well deserved point for the Hoops at home to Cork City Colin Healy put the visitors ahead on the 65th minute with a superbly struck free kick from the edge of the box. Having gone 1-0 down, Rovers manager Michael O'Neill threw caution to the wind and put four strikers on the pitch in an attempt to rescue a point. The gamble paid off as Rovers laid siege to the Cork goal, clawing one goal back and being unfortunate not to go on and grab a winner. In an entertaining match, goalyard action was limited in the first half as the two sides cancelled each other out in the midfield. Twigg's blistering shot on 19 minutes could have put Rovers, playing in front of another sell out crowd at Tallaght, in the lead but Dan Connor did well to stop it. City began to take control of the game in the early stages of the second half, forcing the Hoops defence to concede a number of needless free kicks. It was from one of these that the visitors took the lead, Healy curling the ball around the wall and low into Duggan's bottom right hand corner. Rovers introduced Padraig Amond immediately, shortly followed by Tadhg Purcell, as they chased an equaliser. Amond, in particular, had an immediate impact, hitting the crossbar with a well taken header. However, on 83 minutes Rovers got their reward when after a scramble the ball fell to Twigg, who cooly slotted home from eight yards. Shamrock Rovers: Duggan, Maguire, Treacy, Webb, Rice, Robinson, Cahill, Cameron (Purcell 79), Twigg, O'Connor (Amond 66), Baker. Cork City: Connor, Murphy, O'Halloran, Murray, Healy, Gamble, Silagailis (Kiely 87), Dennehy, Behan, Sullivan, O'Neill (Horgan 27). Ref: R Winter. |
