Shamrock Rovers took all three points from Oriel Park after a Stephen Rice goal gave the Hoops an important win over Dundalk.

Without a win since their 2-1 victory over Sligo Rovers in series 2, Rovers were desperate for a victory. Dundalk, meanwhile, entered the match on the back of good form and would have been confident of taking all three points.

Rice struck after just 11 minutes to score what would prove to be the all important goal. Stephen Bradley's free kick was cleared by the Dundalk defence but the ball feel to Rice, who struck from 20 yards to beat Chris Bennion in the Lilywhite's goal.

The Hoops almost doubled their lead on 25 minutes when Padraig Amond was sent clear on goal but the young striker could not send the ball past the on-rushing Bennion.

Chris Turner almost drew the side's level on 38 minutes but Rovers 'keeper Robert Duggan did superbly to deny the ex-Bohemians attacker from close range.

Shortly after, Rovers were reduced to ten men when Stephen Bradley was shown a second yellow card.

The numerical advantage allowed Dundalk to push forward in numbers, with Declan O'Brien and George O'Callaghan in particular causing problems for the visiting defence.

However, the Hoops held on to take home a precious three points.
