Jason Byrne was the star of the show at Terryland Park as Galway United’s unbeaten run was terminated. Two smashing Byrne goals divided the sides on a blustery night where the Gypsies showed that they intend to keep their tittle. Having shown a commendable ability to eke out wins during the the 2008 double winning season Bohemians were keen to be similarly efficient in the west. The unexpected loss to Cork City vexed the Gypsies, and this three point haul was viewed as the ideal response. Emboldened by their smashing start to the campaign Galway were intent at the outset as Michael McGrath thumped a sixth minute shot on target, but Brian Murphy saved expertly. But the Gypsies then seized control as midfielders Glenn Cronin and Paul Keegan relished the central battle. The Dubliners hit the front in the 31st minute when Jason Byrne skipped clear after both Garry Breen and Shane Guthrie were unable to deal with Brian Shelley’s clearance. Byrne converted the chance with smooth opportunism and showed similar efficiency in the 44th minute when doubling the lead. Keegan’s corner caused panic in the Galway defence and Byrne was crafty enough to nod Pat Fenlon’s charges two ahead. After the break Killian Brennan came within a whisker of adding a third, but Ryan made a fingertip save. Galway United: Ryan; Conneely (Cooke, 59), Breen, Guthrie, Davoren; O’Shea, McBrien (Edwards, 63), Kelly, McGrath, O’Brien; Faherty (Murphy, 83). Bohemians: B Murphy; Shelley, Heary, McGuinness, Rossiter; Brennan, Cronin, Keegan, Carey (S Byrne, 85); J Byrne, Crowe (Ndo, 75). Referee: M Gough (Limerick). |
