Denis Behan highlighted a top-class personal performance at Turner’s Cross with an athletic strike to give Cork City their third consecutive win in the League of Ireland Premier Division. City’s new owner, Tom Coughlan, threw the gates of the stadium open as a gesture to the fans on budget day and an encouraging 2,174 spectators turned out on a night of heavy rain and despite the counter attractions on television. They witnessed an enterprising first half performance by City but then suffered a times in a second half when Drogheda stepped up the pace of their game and succeeded in creating enough chances to have saved a point. Overall Cork enjoyed a distinct edge but their inability to turn a succession of scoring chances to account meant they were always vulnerable. Unfortunately for their new signing, Guntars Silagailis, the majority of chances fell to him on a night when his shooting was awry. Typical of his frustrating outing was the break engineered in the 89th minute by Behan and Davin O’Neill that left Silagailis clear on goal.He closed on goalkeeper Steve Williams from the right and then drove his shot across goal and wide of the far upright. Earlier he had taken advantage of a mistake by Conor Kenna who was forced to turn towards his own goal to retrieve a long clearance from Cork goalkeeper Dan Connor and then failed to control the ball. Silagailis brushed past him to knock the ball clear and then took it wide of the advancing Williams before turning his shot into the side netting in the 78th minute. Drogheda’s chances were not as clear-cut but Ian Ryan got his head to a free from James Chambers in the 54th minute but headed straight at goalkeeper Connor. Within seconds Paul Crowley hammered in a shot that was also directly at Connor. Their best chances came after 83 minutes when Robbie Farrell chased what looked a hopeless ball but managed to dispossess Greg O’Halloran as the defender attempted to usher the ball wide. Farrell turned it back from the deadball line for John Paul Kelly to fire into the side netting. The only goal of the game arrived in the 38th minute. Billy Dennehy set up Silagailis for a shot which Williams did well to parry. The ball flew across goal to where Behan jumped high so his body was parallel to the ground as he volleyed the ball left-footed into the empty net. Cork City: Connor; Sullivan, O’Halloran, Murray, Murphy; O’Neill, Gamble, Healy, Dennehy; Behan, Silagailis. Drogheda United: Williams; Chambers, Ryan, Kenna, Clarke; King (Duffy 75),Crowley, shiels, Kelly; Barrett (Duggan 32), Farrell. Referee: Mr. P. Sutton (Clare). |
