Dundalk claimed the first bragging rights of the 2009 season as they recorded a 3-0 win over Louth rivals Drogheda United at Oriel Park. Drogs started brightly but were given a massive hill to climb after 15 minutes when Conor Kenna was red carded for handling the ball inside the box. Chris Turner stepped-up to send the penalty kick home, sending the home crowd wild. Dundalk took advantage of their numerical advantage and Declan O'Brien and George O'Callaghan both went close. However, Sean Connor's side did not have to wait long for their second goal, which arrived three minutes before half-time. Harpal Singh delivered a wonderful ball into the box, which Darren Mansaram headed into the net. And the game was put beyond doubt three minutes after the break. O'Brien was taken down in the penalty area by Steve Williams, allowing Chris Turner to score his second penalty of the night. DUNDALK: Bennion; Heary, Burns (McGinlay, 50 mins), Rogers; Kelly, O'Callaghan, Daly (Barnett, 82 mins), Turner, Singh; Mansaram (Mulvenna, 75 mins), O'Brien. DROGHEDA UTD: Williams; Whelan, McNally, McKenna, Clarke; Duffy (Farrell, 63 mins), Duggan (King, 53 mins), Shiels, Chambers, O'Connor (Ryan, 19 mins); Martin. REFEREE: A Buttimer (Cork). |
