A game of two halves where a share of the spoils was just about right for two sides who have yet to find the net in their opening two encounters of the new season. Drogheda made all the running in the opening half but couldn’t find a way past a resolute Wanderers defence. Early on United won a free outside the box which James Chambers drove into the wall. Approaching the quarter hour mark Dane Massey appeared to trip John Paul Kelly in the penalty area, however, despite looking long and hard referee Tommy Connolly waved away strong claims for a spot kick from the home side. Kelly then saw his well executed free saved by Chris O’Connor before the keeper was called into action again as the half hour approached when he did well to get down and hold onto Robbie Martins powerful low drive. In stoppage time from a corner on the right the ball was cleared to Chambers who lifted his effort over the bar. Six minutes into the second half Bray at long last created a chance when Dave Mulcahy’s thirty yard wind assisted drive flew narrowly wide. Minutes later Wanderers should have opened their account when Massey’s corner picked out the inrushing Derek Foran who powered his header narrowly over. Immediately the action swung to the other end where Robbie Farrell sent Kelly clear, however, his attempted dink over the advancing O’Connor was stopped by the outstretched arm of the net minder. Beyond the hour Kelly’s dangerous cross from the right was almost turned into his own net by Chris Deans who guided his clearing header narrowly wide. With seventy minutes gone Gary Mc Cabe found some space in the United box but his goal bound strike was brilliantly tipped over by Steve Williams. Bray almost won it at the death when firstly Chris Shield’s pile driver came back off the bar and Williams did ever so well to stop McCabe’s shot which he saw late as it came through a mass of bodies. In stoppage time Drogheda almost nicked the win when Chambers whipped the ball across the six yard line for Paul Shiels who only just failed to get a touch on the ball that would have sent it to the net. Drogheda: Williams, Whelan, McNally, Kenna, Clarke, Kelly, Sheils, Duggan, Chambers, O’Connor (Duffy 68), Martin (Farrell h/t) . Bray: O’Connor, Pender, Massey, Foran, Deans, Doyle (Webster 87), Kavanagh, Mulcahy, Byrne (Forsyth 68), Coughlan (Shields68), McCabe. Referee: T. Connolly (Dublin).
