GALWAY UNITED provided the shock result of the opening night of the new season with a comfortable 3-0 win over St Patrick's Athletic at Richmond Park.

Derek O'Brien bagged two goals against the club he had just left in the transfer window with Vinny Faherty adding the third.

For new St Pat's boss Jeff Kenna the result was a real blow. The former Irish international joined the Saints from Galway in the close season and would have been keen to get off to a decent start at his new club.

Injuries and suspension had cost the Saints a number of experienced options but this was a sub-par display from the Inchicore outfit.

Alan Cawley came closest to scoring for the Saints in the 16th minute after a combination with Andy Haran but his shot was deflected over by a team-mate.

O'Brien opened the scoring just two minutes later when he headed home from a Jay O'Shea free-kick from the left.

After passing up another couple of chances before the break, Galway started the second half on fire and were two up in the 49th minute.

O'Brien skipped into the box on the left hand side and squared for Vinny Faherty to tap home from close range.

It was 3-0 two minutes later when O'Brien fired past Gary Rogers with a fierce drive from just outside the box.

The closest St Pat's came to getting back in the tie was in the 78th minute when Darragh Ryan's long range strike struck the inside of the Galway upright.
