Joseph Ndo struck midway through the second half to get Bohemians' title defence off to the perfect start. The Gypsies took three points from Oriel Park after an exciting match, which saw Dundalk take the game to their visitors. George O'Callaghan and Harpal Singh caused the Bohs defence a tough time early on, but it was Michael Daly who came closest to opening the scoring when his header from O'Callaghan's corner went over on 23 minutes. In front of a large crowd, Sean Connor would have been happy with how his side had performed during the opening period. However, Anthony Murphy almost put the champions in the lead on 40 minutes when he shot at Chris Bennion when he really should have done better. The all important goal came on 72 minutes when Owen Heary delivered a perfect cross into the box and Ndo rose highest to superly head home. The closest the home side came to getting back into the match was on 80 minutes when claims were a penalty kick were waved away. Dundalk -- Bennion, Simon Kelly, Burns, Heary, Rogers, Shaun Kelly, Turner, Daly, Singh, O'Callaghan, O'Brien (Mulvenna 81). Bohemians -- B Murphy, A Murphy, Heary, McGuinness, Rossiter, Ndo, Cronin (Carey 78), Keegan, Brennan, Fenn, Crowe (Deegan 60). Ref -- D McKeon (Dublin). |
