Derry City finally arrested their recent slide as they won their first match in nine at Inchicore.

This was an even contest decided by the Candystripes’ accuracy in front of goal as the locals enjoyed another disappointing night by the Camac.

The only good news for Saints fans came from elsewhere as both Drogheda United and Galway United failed to win.

Mark Quigley almost broke the deadlock within the opening five minutes but his curled effort from Ryan Guy’s ball just cleared the bar.

But, it was Derry who took the lead in fortuitous fashion when Jason Gavin put the ball across his own box, Darragh Ryan miscontrolled the slippy ball and when it fell at the feet of Gareth McGlynn he launched a first time drive that came off Ryan’s leg and spun wildly past Brendan Clarke.

David McDaid almost doubled the lead within a minute, but the Saints refused to lie down and had the better of the play for the rest of the half.

Damian Lynch sent a dangerous cross to the back post but McGlynn put the ball behind, before a move between Bobby Ryan, Gary Dempsey and Mark Quigley came to nothing when Dempsey’s shot was too weak.

They had a penalty shout on the half hour mark but Dave McKeon waved away protests when Bobby Ryan’s cross appeared to come off Peter Hutton’s hand. Things weren’t going there way, but Quigley continue to threaten as his well struck free went just over.

Ger Doherty was forced into a sharp save when Darragh Ryan’s inswinging free was headed goalward by Stuart Byrne, but Derry almost had the last laugh before half time when James McClean found McGlynn whose shot went just wide.

Derry upped the tempo after the break and Molloy might have doubled their lead two minutes into the half, but at the other end Delaney almost conceded a penalty when Ryan’s cross appeared to strike a hand but McKeon again waved the protests away.

And twelve minutes in, teenager David McDaid got on the end of McClean’s low cross to finish well and condemn the Saints to another defeat.

They tried to fight back and Pete Mahon brought Jamie Harris on up front, but to no avail as Quigley had a weak effort saved and Byrne shot over as Derry held on with ease.
