Basement club Bray Wanderers recorded a draw with Dundalk in this Premier Division clash at the Carlisle Grounds.

Bray, with just two matches to play against Derry City (away) and Bohemians (home), now trail ninth placed Drogheda United by four points and the Louth team have a match in hand.

Only a goal-line clearance by defender Shaun Kelly prevented Bray taking the lead on 51 minutes after a corner by Jake Kelly on the right was flicked into a crowded goalmouth by striker Paul Byrne.

Bray eventually took the lead on 57 minutes when a Dave Webster cross from the right was adjudged by referee David McKeon to have been handled by Dundalk central defender Liam Burns inside the area.

It seemed a harsh decision with Kelly firing the resulting penalty past 'keeper Peter Cherry.  Dundalk did have ball in the net on 73 minutes when Darren Mansaram headed home only to be ruled out for offside.

Then an Alex Williams header for the visitors was brilliantly saved by Aussie 'keeper O'Connor after a penetrating cross by defender Shaun Kelly. O'Connor  performed more heroics on 74 minutes when pushing  long range free by McGowan round the post after the ball had taken a vicious deflection off Rowe.

But from the resulting corner by McGowan, midfielder Michael Daly scrambled the ball home in a crowded goalmouth from six yards. Dave Webster then had a late shot for Bray which struck the woodwork and rebounded to safety.

The home side did have one late chance of a winner when substitute Chris Shields set up a chance for winger Kelly but his effort was blocked by 'keeper Cherry.

Bray Wanderers - O'Connor; Pender, Webster, Deans, Doyle; Tresson (Shields 81), Brennan (Coughlan 90), Mulcahy, J.Kelly; Byrne, Flood (Mulroy 85).

Dundalk - Cherry, Shaun Kelly, Burns, Coburn, Simon Kelly (Murphy 65); Michael McGowan, Daly, McAreavey, Mansaram; Rowe, Williams.
