Shamrock Rovers returned to the top of the Premier Division table with a comfortable 2-0 win over Drogheda United at the Tallaght Stadium.

Dessie Baker put the Hoops ahead on six minutes when he raced clear on goal and finished past Drogs goalkeeper Paul Skinner.

The home side had been firmly in control of proceedings and their task was made easier on 23 minutes when Drogs skipper Conor Kenna was shown a straight red card after hauling down Graham Barrett when the former Ireland international striker was clear on goal.

Barrett had looked dangerous all night and he got his reward on 44 minutes when he netted his first goal in the green and white. The former Arsenal striker was put clear on goal and he made no mistake from the edge of the penalty area.

With a 2-0 lead in the bag, Rovers simply played the remainder of the match out. The second half was almost devoid of incident, although Barrett did hit the crossbar with a delightful chip.
