dramatic 72nd winner from Eoin Doyle saw Sligo Rovers climb out of the relegation zone with a 1-0 defeat of Bray Wanderers at The Showgrounds last night.

The home side had dominated the first half and twice hit the woodwork, but Bray looked like they might hang on until Rovers boss Paul Cook introduced Dean Marshall and Darren Meenan with 20 minutes left.

And, just seven minutes after his introduction, Marshall provided a superb cross for Doyle to finish to the net with Rovers’ first shot on target in the second period.

Rovers made one change from the side that defeated Galway last time out, with Romuald Boco returning from international duty in place of the injured Joe Kendrick.

Bray made three changes from the team that defeated Cork City, with Jake Kelly and Daire Doyle earning starts, and Alessandro Reyes handed a surprise debut as part of a five-man defence.

But Rovers tore this defence apart in the opening half, and Richie Ryan saw a left-foot shot smack off the post, while Matthew Blinkhorn’s 42nd minute strike came off the crossbar.

Boosted by these let-offs, Bray were much better in the second period, and could have opened the scoring when substitute Gary McCabe got in behind the defence only to see his goalbound shot cleared off the line by Danny Ventre.

Rovers responded by introducing Marshall and Meenan, and they immediately upped their side’s performance, with Marshall finding a bit of space down the right.

And they finally got the breakthrough when the winger picked out the run of Doyle to fire home.

Rovers had to withstand some late pressure from the visitors, with substitute Colm Tresson twice going close. But Ciaran Kelly kept his third successive clean sheet in the Rovers goal, and the home side hung on for a valuable three points.
