The title race looks set to go down to the final five games after Bohemians kept their chase alive with a routine win over Drogheda United at Dalymount. With Shamrock Rovers securing a precious win up in Derry, the champions needed to respond in kind and after surviving some early scares they scored two goals either side of half time to stay two points behind. Pat Fenlon kept faith with the team who lost the derby at Tallaght last weekend with the only change an enforced switch with Killian Brennan replacing Mark Rossiter. And Brennan rewarded his manager with a fine attacking display that showed just how much he was missed in the tight Tallaght environs last weekend. Drogheda had some early pressure and James Chambers and Ross Gaynor went close before Alan McNally’s 25th minute header from Brendan McGill’s corner hit the bar with Brian Murphy beaten. Having survived that scare, the champions punished the wasteful Louthmen two minutes later as Byrne made up for his derby penalty miss by stealing on to Conor Kenna’s underhit back pass to score. The relief around the old ground was palpable and Joseph Ndo made sure there’d be no more worries by doubling the lead three minutes later with a superb overhead kick from Brennan’s corner. Bohs looked to hit Drogheda on the break in the second half and it worked a charm as Conor Powell broke forward eight minutes in, played a one-two with Brennan and chipped Steve Williams inadvertently to score his first ever goal for the club. The popular left back didn’t seem to care if he meant it or not as he celebrated raucously with his team mates and fans. And they had one more piece of celebrating to do as after Byrne and Paddy Madden missed chances to complete the victory before their record goalscorer Glen Crowe showed them how it’s done with an injury time header from Anto Murphy’s cross. Job done, and for Drogheda it was a night to forget as wins for Sligo and Bray make their position all the more perilous.
